BRENDAN MATTHYS CONTINUES TO
DOMINATE THE K-3 SECTION (41 players)
Brendan Matthys (775) scored a perfect 5.0 to win the K-3
section. The K-3 section has become VERY competative, as
evidenced by the much higher ratings of the top players.
Four-year-old Zane Ice (753) was undefeated heading into the
final round and played Brendan on board 1, but the upset was not to
happen and Zane had to settle for a well earned second place.
Four others were tied at 4.0 including Sanuel Leighton (652), Sean
Matthys (704), Pasha Katehakis (434) and Isaac Mooreman (601).
The Matthys brothers along with Pasha lead their Indialantic team
to a first place victory with an impressive 15.5 points.
Samuel lead Gemini Elementary to second place with 13points.
Holy Trinity, despite only having three players (4 are allowed) took
third place with 10.5 points.
EDWARD LI AND NICHALOS MOORE END UP TIED IN K-5
SECTION WITH 4.5 EACH (55 players)
Accelerated pairings were again used to avoid
the continued problem with perfect score tie between two
players. The tougher pairings had the desired results and
there were no perfect scores in the K-5 section. Being on the
same team, Nichoals (1143) and Edward (1090) were not
paired against each other, but both faced William Stewart (973),
last year's K-3 Grand Prix Champion. Each could only manage a
draw against William despite superior ratings. Edward took
home the first place trophy by a mere half point on the
third tie-breaker! The slimmest possible margin. Due to
his tough parings, William finshed in third on tie-breaks while
tied with five others at 4.0 each.
With top performance by Nicholas and Edward,
you would expect an easy first place for the Gemini team.
However, William lead his Indialantic team to a tie with Gemini,
both with 14 points each. Again, a very close tie-break score
resulted in Gemini finishing on top. Holy Trinity again
finished third with consistent play from all their
players.
KEVIN HU AND DENNIS
KOKSAL-RIVET ARE TIED IN THE K-12 SECTION (28
Players)
As expected, the two top rated players
finished tied at 4.5 points each. Dennis (956) and Kevin
Varun (1047) faced off in round four, but only managed a tie.
Once again, the final decision came down to the tie-breakers.
Kevin took first due to the good performance of all his
opponents. Geoffrey Clark (900) and Jenna Hindsley (784) both
ended tied at 4.0, each losing only to Kevin Hu. Geoffrey took
thrid on tie-breaks and Jenna had to settle for fourth
place.
he consistent play of the Holy
Trinity players (12 points total) finally earned
themselves a first place finished, lead by Jenna's four
points. Freedom 7 finished second with 8.5 points and
Gemini took third with 7 points |
